Little Things

Something for the whole family.

When you are out walking on the trails look for a patch of moss like that to the right of the glove in the photo.  Get down on your knees with a magnifying glass and look carefully.  The leaves of the moss are very small and only one cell thick.  Unlike other plants the leaves of moss can get water directly from the atmosphere without the need for roots.  They get carbon dioxide the same way.  This time of year, there will be stalks growing out of the moss with capsules on the ends.  The capsules contain spores for the next generation of moss.  No flowers for this plant.  Many different types of moss, and they grow in a variety of places – on the ground, on rocks, and even on rooftops.
