Workday planting event

Location: Herman Road FWF Orange/Pink/Yellow trails, in the wetter areas

Focus on wetland roses, arrowwood, cranberry

Label flags – Carolyn (get them from Norma)

Prep work

Marking locations

  • Andy, Norma, Sarah, Jessica, Carolyn, Paul
  • Norma to pick a date

Protection

  • Hornbeam doesn’t need protection
  • Inventory
    • Metal fencing for ~20 from Norma/John
    • Plastic tubes for ~10
    • Snow fencing for ~15 from Sarah
    • Metal fencing for ?? from Paul
    • Habitat to remove some from WRNP to repurpose. Jessica and Norma to do some, too.
  • Sarah to order more fencing/stakes
  • Cardboard mulch – Carolyn and John have at least ~75 (don’t need them for swamp rose)

  • Sarah to do FB, Website, email to membership
  • CC Missy Rosenberry
  • Ask town to put on Instagram

Schedule

Friday, 10/18

  • Deliver wheelbarrow/wagon to HRFWF before meeting at nursery
  • Transport plants – Sarah and John and Paul, meet at nursery at 9am
  • Transport protection materials – Sarah, John, and Paul
  • Deliver water – Norma to deliver on Herman Rd parking lot on 10/18
  • Tools
    • Bring shovels from trailer with plants
    • Bring hammers/small sledge to pound in stakes

Saturday, 10/19

  • Meet at nursery/Parks & Rec, carpool from there
    • Sarah to update FB and Website to note location
  • Team be there at 8:30 am
  • All members of ReTree will be “crew chiefs” for planting groups
  • Divide up groups to ensure some folks are assigned to planting, installing protection, and recording locations.

 

RGE Event

  • Location: Finn Park, with bigger trees parallel the creek, and nursery plants in the woods
  • Date: TBD – Sarah to coordinate with Matt to be after the October workday
  • Tree order: basswood, tulip tree, sugar maple, hornbeam – 3 of each, straight species, not hybridized. Request ball/bag if Matt thinks the team can deliver them to the planting site.
  • Nursery plants to be used: oak (6), mulberry (3), chokecherry (6), black cherry (10), witch hazel (15), spicebush (10), Chris Pine (1)
  • Additional planning needed – meeting TBD. Need to mark planting sites, deliver plants/materials.
  • Talk with Steward (Jessica to talk with Becka Bonn) and Glenn (Norma).

 

Future plans

Planning meeting needed for 2025, particularly for choosing plants to order for nursery.
