Nearly a third of a mile of split rail fence borders the Big Field on the west and south sides. It was recently replaced in 2017 by Friends of Webster Trails with the Genesee Land Trust buying the materials. Webster Parks and Recreation mows the field but cannot get close to the fence with the big equipment. The vegetation accumulates and overwhelms the fence. This is not just an appearance issue. Tough vines in the vegetation such as grape vines and bittersweet entwine the posts and rails, and when caught by equipment used to mow the field, can pull down the fence.
Thirteen folks at the FWT workday on April 20 made quick work of clearing the fence line of growth as can be seen from the before and after photos below. With this good start perhaps, maintenance will be less of an issue in the future.
