ReTree’s Fourth Annual Tree Planting

More than 600 trees, and counting…

Saturday was graduation day. For the trees.

Now in the fourth year, ReTree’s fall tree planting event has put lots of trees in the ground around Webster. But this year was special: Nearly all of the trees and shrubs were grown from seeds that were started in the ReTree nursery.

Twenty volunteers made quick work of planting 34 trees and shrubs in Whiting Road Nature Preserve along the Blue and Yellow trails.

All of the plants are native to this area, with a mix of larger trees, including white oak and tulip poplar, and shrubs like mulberry, high bush cranberry, and ninebark. These will provide food and habitat for animals and insects.

Species more prone to damage from deer and rabbits were caged for protection, and Mother Nature provided a bit of extra moisture from above.

With these “graduates” now in their forever homes, the ReTree nursery is a bit empty, but come spring, a new group of babies will be settled in, and next fall a new group of graduates will move into a preserve.

Thanks to our volunteers, and come join us next year!
