A week ago, we were just getting started. Today, 61 new trees and shrubs are in the ground and nearly 100 seedlings are in pots, thanks to scores of volunteers at several ReTree events.
After the successful planting along the Hojack Trail on Apr. 19, volunteers from Ciena planted 15 trees and shrubs in Herman Road Forever Wild Forest. The planting took place along the Orange Trail, which has many beech trees affected by beech bark disease. The larger trees planted here will succeed the beech as they die back, ensuring the Herman Road Forest will, indeed, be Forever Wild.

Then on Arbor Day, April 24, volunteers planted nine shrubs along the Hojack Trail near Drumm Road.
The willow shrubs have a maximum height of 15 feet, making them perfect to be under the power lines while offering screening and providing habitat for insects and birds. The shrubs were part of the generous donation from RG&E, most of which was planted the week before.
Capping off the week, the annual spring potting day at the ReTree Nursery was a success, despite the cool temperatures and steady rain.

Nearly 20 hearty souls spent part of the morning on Sat. April 25 potting almost 100 seedlings. These will be nurtured in the ReTree Nursery for 12 to 18 months, growing larger before they can be planted in one of Webster’s preserves.
The seedlings are sourced from Monroe County and New York State, and they range from about 12 inches to 18 inches tall. After a season or two growing in the nursery, they will be more robust and prepared to thrive in their forever homes.
