How to Volunteer

Log Trail Maintenance Hours

Friends of Webster Trails is powered by our dedicated volunteers who give their time to make Webster’s preserves the gems that they are. If you have a few hours a week, or a few a year, we have ways to give back to the trails.

Volunteers will be asked to sign a volunteer waiver form.

Trail Workday

Volunteers at a spring workday

Workdays are generally held the third Saturday of each month from April to October, but check the Events page to be sure and for the location. Projects can range from clearing trails to building infrastructure like bridges, and planting trees or reinforcing the footpath. The time commitment is roughly two hours, and any special skills are noted on the Events page, where you can register to participate.

Habitat Preservation

Every Friday morning in good weather, the Habitat Preservation group meets at various locations to improve the natural character of the open space in our preserves. They clear invasive species, reintroduce native plants, and monitor the health of the ecosystems. The time commitment is one to two hours, and you can pitch in for one week or many.

ReTree Project

Spring potting at the ReTree nursery

ReTree is an effort to improve the habitat and resiliency of our preserves by adding native trees and shrubs. It maintains a nursery of seedlings to be nurtured and planted when they are larger, with a spring potting event at the nursery, ongoing maintenance at the nursery, and a fall planting day, plus ad hoc planting throughout the season. The spring and fall events are each two to three hours of time, and ongoing nursery maintenance is about one hour a week, where you can pitch in for one week or many. Ad hoc events are usually publicized on the Facebook page and in emails to the FWT membership.

Email contact@webstertrails.org to volunteer.

Trail Partner

If you are out on the trails often and you’re looking to pitch in with routine maintenance or special projects, you could partner with the Trail Stewards. You would work in close contact with the Steward to identify ways you can help. The time commitment is several hours a month, with varied tasks.

Email contact@webstertrails.org to volunteer to be a Trail Partner.

Trail Steward

Stewards with a newly constructed puncheon

Trail Stewards are a key resource, dedicated to the maintenance of one or more trails. They actively monitor and maintain the trail, ideally at least weekly, identifying and resolving issues, clearing down trees (with help if needed), mowing for certain trails, and looking for ways to improve the trail. The time commitment is a minimum of a few hours each week throughout the year.

If you are looking for a way to really give back to the trails, email contact@webstertrails.org to get in touch with the Trails Committee Chair for more information.

Special Projects

These projects can range from building a new boardwalk to replacing decking on a bridge, removing trash to planting a pollinator garden, and so much more. The time investment is generally large, making this sort of project perfect for groups or Eagle projects. We often have a list of projects in mind, but we welcome your ideas, too. Email us with your ideas at contact@webstertrails.org.
