HRFWF Benching

“Bench” – verb, to level a walking trail.

Herman Road Forever Wild Forest – FWT workday 9/21/24

Ten to fifteen folks met with HRFWF steward Ben Wisniewski for this workday.  After a brief introduction, we set out on the trails and the jobs Ben had in mind.  He started us with easy jobs on the new green trail like raking the trail free of debris and finding sticks and logs to mark the edges.  Then we moved on to the red trail and the jobs he really wanted done.  Several of the trails had very steep sections which needed switchbacks to make them more accessible.  The switchbacks would be on the side of a hill and required benching.  This involved cutting into the high side of the trail and using this dirt to build up the low side making the surface level.  About two hours of benching will really take the starch out of you.
